I have to agree with you on that one.  I sent in material to qualify for a 
US$40 rebate on QuickBooks.   I called the "central" office to get a status 
on the refund.  They don't seem to have me listed on their "system", but I 
did get a confirmation of delivery of the package from Canada Post.
It just involves a lot of extra "processing" extra humans for nothing.   I'd 
rather just get the "rebate" at the time of purchase. 
Simple.
I took advantage of another mail in rebate: "KODAK Film $5 rebate offer" 
based on a 5-filmpak purchase.  I sent it in on Sep 21'97 (offer to expire 
Dec'97), but I never received my $5.
