Yup, urban raccoons. There's a family of them living in the woods at the
back of my house (Shoreline, just north of Seattle). The male is about the
size of a medium dog and is completely unafraid - rambles across my back
garden while I'm out there in broad daylight. I surprised him on the path a
while back and he did the classic rear-up-and-hiss thing at me. So
naturally I hissed right back and he backed down, but my cat stays indoors
because she's just about daft enough to have a go.

The problem is that people feed the raccoons and they start expecting it,
then get pissed off and aggressive when a handout isn't forthcoming.

I think I preferred the urban foxes we got in England. Cuter and less
aggressive. (The four legged variety that is.)
