Oh they might be ball bearings as the katyushas might be old.

Certainly they are easily available & effective.

However a professionally designed weapon is designed for maximum
"effectiveness" & steel cubes are both more effective &
easier to pack (thus giving a greater volume for more of the nasty bits of
death).
