shc> Hello folks
shc> I am with problems connecting to some sites.
shc> The most important for me is: ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu
shc> Right now I discovered other site with the same problem:
shc> ftp://ftp.std.com
shc> As Jacob, the maintainer of Hobbes said to me, the reason is:
this is because some ISPs do not set up reverse DNS lookups... some say
this is some sort of effort to block spammers... others just have no
clue...
d:\>>host 200.206.190.207
shc> 200.206.190.207 = 200-206-190-207.customer.telesp.net.br
d:\>>host 200-206-190-207.customer.telesp.net.br
shc> C:\MPTN\BIN\host.exe: unknown host
shc> 200-206-190-207.customer.telesp.net.br
what you are seeing is "one way" DNS... basically, they have set
up the lookup for the IP to resolve to the name but do not have entries for
the names to resolve to the IP numbers...
shc> I signed contract with another ISP, Telefonica sucks!
won't do any good if they, too, do the same thing... and it can be worse if
one uses a static domain service for dynamic IPs... in other words, a
domain name that stays the same for you no matter what IP you are on... in
my case, i have several domain names that all resolve to my current IP
connection... however, a lookup on the IP number only returns the domain
that my ISP has assigned to that number... the others won't be found...
