PART TWO
If there ever is a Start-Over, that is.
Why do we think? What is our consciousness, that we should ponder such
things? That is the philosophical question of the universe.
We might be the Universe's only chance. Then again we may be simply
observers, getting to watch the show for a moment before being snuffed
out forever. But... how... is... that... possible? Aren't we able to
determine our own destiny? We presume so. We're determined to find out,
in any case.
But then we are going to have to change our form. Are we going to try to
remain human to do it? Humans are flawed. Surely we can conjur a more
perfect species - one without the need for "Laws" written down someplace.
One insightful person one day wrote: "The letter of the law kills, but the
spirit brings life." And it's quite remarkable that the scientist has
to respectfully bow to such a wise saying, indeed, to find out anything.
What we need is some realization - that we can remain human only if we
redefine what a human is _supposed_ to be. That's a tall order, considering
there are so many of us, and all of us have a different opinion about
who we ought to emulate. But if only the remnant survives, wouldn't
you prefer to be in that remnant?
But if we aren't coporeal enough to consciously realize that we can be
in a remnant, and survive through the ages in one form or another...?
Why human, particularly? Seriously. Why not a planet? A planet lasts
longer, and is around to see things happen. Why not a star, in fact?
Would not our star, Sol, the Sun, be a more long-lived subject to carry
our consciousness into the next age?
Maybe it has already been carrying it. Perhaps our Sun has more in it,
than just... elements. Who can define it? What would we call it?
"Consciousness" is the best term. What about the Galaxy itself? Maybe
not our Sun, but the Galaxy. It has been around even longer than our Sun
has, and will outlive it by gazillions. We should be the Galaxy, that's
it. Then we could see forever.... nah. We need something even bigger
and longer lasting than a Galaxy. We need a Cluster. What we need now
is a consciousness transmutation device. We need a way to integrate
our consciousness into other entities. That's it. Who is going to work
on this project? All 6 billion of us would only have to use a small
portions of the total number of clusters - but we have to find clusters
unoccupied. They aren't ours, you know?
"We are called forth by the Universe because it needed us."
What does it need us _for_? To land safely? To burn for it? To
exist? To make it happy? For it to make us happy? To see it happen,
and then die?
... "But once you are real, you can't become unreal again."
