I'm not so sure about that.  At least this way you give the passengers a
chance at living, I'm not sure you could say that of *any* other way.

That wont work, the hijackers would just start killing people one by one
until either they're all dead, or the crew gives up.  You could have some
kind of sleeping gas triggered by the cockpit I suppose, but even that
supposes the hijackers don't have gas masks, and you're probably going to
kill a few passengers because of allergies and/or gas concentration.
(remember the Russian theater.)
