RP> The Separation of School and State Alliance held its third major
RP> conference this last November, in Arlington, Virginia. Their basic
RP> premise is that in order for real education reform to take place, the
RP> state must be removed from education altogether. You can read about
RP> it and how they conclude poor students would benefit most at:
RP> http://www.basenet.net/~eagle/educate/1998/jan98/conference.htm
Thanks, I will check it out.
DH> of fact, access to education(note, I said education, not schools) has
DH> been one of the reasons our nation has become the greatest nation this
DH> world has ever seen. This access was not always provided by the
DH> government, but has always been there.
RP> Still would be - parents would see to it, just as they did originally
RP> in this country.
Exactly, and as a result the quality of education would go up.
RP> Whatever they come up with would be far better than
RP> the public school system we now have - just recently, a city in
RP> Michigan (think it was Michigan, coulda been Wisconsin) gave a new
RP> dumbed-down standardized test to every student in the city, and NO ONE
RP> PASSED!
I am not surprised, I am in the Memphis schools regularly, and much of
what I see is not pretty.
RP> Teaching at a college part-time places me in the position of working
RP> with the products of our public education system on a regular basis,
RP> where direct interaction and observation shows them continuing to get
RP> worse. The situation is well beyond pathetic.
What do you teach, conservatism 101?
RP> Just saw a news report showing the latest math and science score
RP> comparisons internationally - the US now ranks 18th of 21 nations.
Not good.
