Their evenness was maintained by US support for Iraq.  Reagan
administration insiders have admitted that it was in our best intestest to
prolong the Iran/Iraq war as long as possible, and we dribbled support to
Iraq to maintain parity.  If Iraq had had the upper hand, we surely would
have found a way to support Iran.
