com.sys is loaded. I have a real serial port at com1, and it needs
com.sys to drive it. Do you mean that I cannot have both a hardware
serial port and a USB serial device at the same time?

Yes, it replaces com.sys for the port that you intend to use with the
modem, but they can coexist in the system if they are assigned to
different ports.

I've never used Hyper Access Lite nor ZOC, because it's been years since I
used a modem to connect to the internet, and then I used In-Joy. I
downloaded and installed ZOC, and somehow got it into terminal mode so
that I could send a command to the modem. The modem responds "OK" to
AT&F.

Telling PMFax that it's a Class 1 modem gets PMFax to dial a number and
attempt to send a fax. The modem has been unable to negotiate a speed
with the fax at my son's business, I think, but everything else seems to
work correctly. The failure to send the fax is reported by PMFax as,
"General failure during transmission.", whatever that might mean. The
modem is a cheap external one that I got a couple of years ago when
motherboards stopped coming with AT slots. It purports to have an Intel
chipset, though God knows which one. Its a Prime Peripherals V.90 56K Fax
Modem.
