-=> Quoting Alan Whiteman to Paul Edwards (usa - Gods <=- AW> Hello USA Paul! AW> Giving up BBSing for a few months was great. I ended up putting more And you missed out on the best stuff..... Seriously, one has to be more selective these days about the amount one has to read, time does simply not permit it. AW> motivation into my work, looked seriously for a new job, and ended up AW> getting a new job where at least the remuneration was not at the AW> miniscule level of a public servant. This then led to being able to AW> afford to get a home loan, which has lead to me moving in four weeks. Congrats. AW> I gave up BBSing after returning disillusioned from a driving holiday AW> in your country. It finally hit me during that trip that the US had a AW> significantly higher standard of living than Australia. For years I AW> kidded myself that we were luckier here in Australia than you Yanks AW> because we had less crime, more open spaces, easier going people, and AW> better/cheaper food. If finally hit me that if you weigh up all the AW> important things (positives and negatives), living in the States would AW> be preferable to living here at the arse-end of the world. I mean what Don't kid yourself. The grass always seems greener on the other side, especially when on holiday. You always only see the good side of things. Being a somewhat recent immigrant to Oz, what you hear about in other countries only barely touches the surface. It is only when you actually start living in a country that you see all the flotsam and jetsam lying around. It wasn't until I arrived here that I saw the monumental waste of money that gets spend on public servants, and that includes ministers and the associated staff. What a joke, and all those leeches for only 16 million population. AW> a joke. Australians crow about the natural beauty of this and that, AW> but you've really got to be a fan of scraggy gum trees and boring AW> deserts to claim Australia's got any decent sightseeing. I was out Two minds about this. Yes, there is an overabundance of gum trees. Gum trees for bloody miles. But what about NT and the rain forests. Been there ? AW> Australia is a joke in many other ways. To hear the bragging during AW> the Commonwealth games (you wouldn't have heard of this competition) You think Oz stands alone in this ? The yanks have got to be one of the most patriotic and one-eyed nation in the world. Bet you a zillion buckeroos that the Commonwealth games even got mentioned, unless it was the parting comments of Tunstill, or a Canadian medal win. Most yanks wouldn't even know where Oz is, or even give a stuff where it is. AW> So I returned from holidays with the thought of looking into obtaining AW> a green card. Unfortunately the obstacles were significant - my wife AW> doesn't share my enthusiasm and I couldn't leave my two cats behind. It is no better. But that is only my opinion. I did seriously check into that quite a few years ago, and I spoke to alot of people, albeit in LA and Boston, and it aint all cool and groovy. Funnily enough, most of them wanted to immigrate down here, had a gutful of life in the USA. Like I said, greener pastures.... AW> But at that stage I thought, well fuck Fidonet. But now I'm picking AW> up locuser, locsysop and avtech again because it's quite convenient AW> to quickly scan a mail packet every few days, and the RTL/poofter AW> thread is good for a laugh. Once hooked......... Dieter ... ".... Org.Asm not found, should I fake it?
