Like I said, I've done these before.  Procedure isn't the issue.

But I found the problem.  That is I found a symptom of the problem, for
both data and boot CDs.  It won't burn them successfully at 4x any more. 
Writing them at 2x gets the job done in both cases, while 4x was the
best speed previously.  I haven't tried 3x.

Wouldn't that mean that the CD/RW machine is getting arthritis?  On
average I've used it maybe once every week or two for a year and a half. 
Doesn't sound like enough to make it start dying.  Do these lasers croak
whether or not they are used?
