Hello Wayne -

WC> Long range plan.

Tom Walker has said he is buying 17" monitors for $49 US from a
San Diego retailer. They have 19" at comparable discounts.

Bill Gates predicted that the Internet would replace TV about
two decades ago (back when he hated the Internet).

Not really, photographic images are something like 150,000
times more 'pixels' than the best monitor can display right now.

btw: The GIMP is available in a Windows version. :-)

I would advise caution when moving GIF to JPG. JPG is a lossy
format which seems harmless enough the first time you use it.
If you must reload to alter the JPG and re-save it there is a
_second_ reduction that eventually deteriorates the graphic to
a fuzzy mess. GIF can be reloaded and resaved as often as you
need to with no losses at all.

WC> Someone sent me a PDF with just a short message and photo,

See above.

Opera browser has this built in to magnify or reduce the entire
screen including text and graphics.

WC> Norton's not too bad at 30 bucks after rebate but it's 60

Downloading malicious anything using POP3 is harmless. MS
Outlook being as automated as it is is a problem. If you use
Eudora or any normal popmail program you just delete any mail
you do not recognize the sender of or do recognize and know
them to be a putz. Women tend to forward mail without any
thought to where they got it from and I tend to delete those
even from my own daughters without reading them.

ZoneAlarm works for most people and AVG virus scanner is free
as is F-Protect but only in their CLI version. Useful as a
backup scanner for individual downloads prior to installing
them. Ad-Aware is free and will help remove the spyware. No
need to spend any money on these at all.
