Speak for yourself. I've never abused drugs to that degree. What I did
do was use one pediatric capsule of Dilatin a day for ten years in
recovery from alcoholism. I stopped drinking when I realized my
tolerance for that drug had dropped: one bottle of beer gave me a three
day headache. I'd worked at Shadel Hospital in Seattle part time as an
R.N. in the summertime and learned much from reading patient files.
Yup. And functioned quite well thank you during that time. No loss of
nurses' license, no loss of income with which to raise my two girls.
Worked fine until my body rebelled and the immune system went to hell in
a handbasket. Dilantin can be one of the more dangerous drugs to use
for idiopathic epilepsy which is exactly why some doctors replace it
with Tegretol as fast as they can.
One of them was the woman who headed up the drug treatment unit in the
Juneau hosptial when I worked in Alaska. She held inservice sessions
for counselors in various places, one being in Ketchikan. I was able to
fly over from Metlakatla one day and catch her. She explained quite
clearly why she didn't like Dilantin.
I'd detoxed from that drug with the help of other addicts. Ever try to
tell someone that you think you don't need a drug like that anymore?
It is one of the easiest legal drugs to abuse. No one will deny a
prescription to anyone who asks for it. And no pharmacy will refuse to
sell someone one or two pills "until the doctor can phone in".
What the Dilantin did for me was act like speed. My mind went too fast
and still can go faster than it is sometimes comfortable, even for me.
Why did I start in on this? Because of an article in some national
magazine by someone who had used it for the same reason. It does work,
for awhile.
But then, so does marijuana, Demerol, morphine, Diluadid, and a host of
other substances. Until the tolerance is gone and addiction begins.
Getting rid of one drug with another drug is not getting clean and
sober.
