subject: Usr Upgrade My Delay

Hello Bob, Well I called USR and they said they were out of stock on
the Sportster 839 upgraded modems! They claim they will get some more
stock by September 22nd, and I should recieve my new modem two weeks
after that....trick or treat?

Anyways, as I do not have 56k internet service at my college yet, I am
doing ok with the old buggy modem, using AT&K0 when I call BBS's to
eliminate the modem "hangs". You don't have to use that when you call
your internet server, although sometimes while logging in it "hangs"
and I have to call back and try again (ATZ4).

Glad to hear there are not any major problems with the 839B upgrade, it
is about time they got it right! ;-)

I had heard you need to use S15=128 to disable the v.42 MNP data
compression on the 56k modems as the modem could not process it that
fast, but that might have applied to the modems that were processor
upgraded only, it seems the new circuit boarded modem you have works
good.

For those who might mention you can use S12=0 and S2=128 on the old 839
33.6 modems, yes I tried it but there are still character delays and
when I am on the BBS's I don't need any character delays. AT&K0
eliminates all character delays, and if I want to download I can use
the other sequence if I want data compression.

Enjoy your new modem Bob! John :)
