This reminds me of something I used to do

REM --> Set up com ports to buffer
REM 12/21/01 RUN=F:\OS2\MODE.COM
COM1:38400,N,8,1,DTR=OFF,RTS=OFF,BUFFER=ON REM 12/21/01
RUN=F:\OS2\MODE.COM COM3:38400,N,8,1,DTR=OFF,RTS=OFF,BUFFER=ON

As you can see, it's now REM'ed out, but there was a time that I needed to
run these from config.sys to ensure happy startup for some comm programs.

The problem was that some comm programs made incorrect assumptions about
the initial port state.

Another item to ponder is what I currently do when I need to pull pmfax
offline.  I use a 4os2 program object which does

/c mode co80,10 & fxrcv -off & mode com1 rts=hs & {at}echo. &
{at}pause Fax Rx
turned off.  Check switched to A and press enter to turn on FAX Rx. & mode
com1 rts=hs & fxrcv -on
