Not at all. My experience is that if com.sys is loaded first, it grabs
COM1 to COM4 even if there is no hardware attached. This means that
usbser will grab COM5 and that's where your modem will be.
Is this what you are seeing?
Of course, if you load usbser.sys first it's going to get COM1 and com.sys
will get what's left, but I don't know how well this will work.

That's pretty much a generic error.
What you might want to do is start pmfax with the -v option. This will
generate a nice fat debug trace call vout.log or something similar.

You might need to twiddle with some of the settings discussed in the pmfax
readme.
Also, sometimes it helps to limit the speed to 9600.
