have you tried:
    if cstr$(text1.text)  cstr$(vbnullstring) then ...
    if cdbl(text2.text)  cdbl(0) then ...
    if cdate(text3.text)  cdate(0) then ...
?   in all these cases the if block will execute if the field is not null.
