LAUNCHES
ARIANE--After months of delays, the second launch of the Ariane 5
rocket was successful on October 30. The new launcher carried into
orbit three payloads: dummy satellites MAQSATs B and H, and a smaller
scientific satellite called Teamsat. (AP and Reuters)
The amateur radio Amsat Phase 3D satellite was to have flown on this
flight. However, it now emerges that in August the European Space
Agency cancelled its contract with Amsat, after ESA ordered
modifications in Phase 3D (so it could handle increased vibration)
that took longer to complete than ESA wanted to wait. (AMSAT)
ASTRA--The October 25 launch of the Astra 1G satellite on a Russian
Proton rocket has been postponed until November 21. The manufacturer,
Hughes, reportedly discovered faults in the satellite's communications
says, and in one of its fuel tanks. (Curt Swinehart)

BBC--Perhaps because of the impending launch of BBC News 24, its
domestic 24 hour news channel, the BBC has launched a news Web site,
to take on CNN:
