Ups and downs as ever, but I'm finally coming to realise that the
downs do resolve themselves to ups.

That's a real problem. The BBS I'd been using for my fido net address
seems not to like my new modem and doesnt read my keystokes in BW,
but give a try at this other one I sometimes use - IBASE BBS 2:254/241
