My point was that if anyone gets fired it should be the manager, whose
policy the clerk was following, not the clerk.

And yes, if the disgruntled customer should file a lawsuit, you can bet the
manager will be gone, sacrificed for causing the company to defend itself
in a suit.  Even if the policy was from company headquarters, sacrificing a
lowly store manager would be almost routine rather than somebody higher up.
