Hi Scott,
SC>The problem is still capacity. Lower prices, people talk longer and make
SC>more calls, if you don't increase system capacity, then the blocking rates
SC>go up. People get more fast busies, calls are dropped because of no room
n
SC>the cell site that the call is supposed to be handed too.
One would think that if there is a perceived need for higher capacity,
this would be an incentive to have more cells. Obviously as these phones
get more popular, this is going to have to occur.
SC>Unfortunately, the number of radio channels for cellular is limited so
nce
SC>you hit the limit for an area, the only thing you can do is to split
ites,
SC>this is expensive and isn't always possible due to the problems of getting
SC>tower space. Besides, you can only make the cells so small.
I'm sure that as needs increase, these providers will think of
something. Let's face it, the profit motive always has managed to spur
on a solution to everything.
SC>Unfortunately, with cellular telephony, more people can sometimes make
SC>things worse rather than better. If it isn't economical to increase
SC>capacity thruout the whole system, rates may have to be raised to keep
SC>traffic levels down to acceptable levels. Otherwise the system may become
SC>so busy that it becomes difficult to make calls or keep calls.
Possibly so, but people were saying the same about landlines back in the
old days, then computer exchanges, multiplexing and fibre-optics came
along. Good old know-how seems to save the day every time.
By the way, I received your letter with the various phone plans - thank
you. I have put together some of our provider's plans, however I had to
go to hospital for some surgery and I am stuck at home recuperating for
the next week, so I cannot get out and gather the rest of the papers I
want to include. As soon as I do, they will be in the mail to you. I
hope that the address on the envelope is the right one.
Cheers - Ziggy
