Oh dear, then why did the same thing happen earlier this morning?  The
modems started their V.34 negotiation just fine, then stopped halfway
through with what sounded like a very loud continuous ~1KHz tone.  The next
call connected OK though.  Wonder if it was because the temperature here
was near zero?  I'd just turned the modem on, so perhaps they don't like
the cold weather?
