"And it was going SO well!" Prices jumped at the open and quickly made
decent progress, which they held MOST of the day. But at 3ET they fell
off a cliff, closing up less than 2pts. Volume sank to -4% below
average. However Up-Volume was significantly higher than Down-Volume.

I heard some speculation that one of the big investment houses just had
some big lots to sell, as there was no particular news on the Street to
cause such action. I had the time to go look at an intra-day price &
volume chart. I might have expected to see a spike in volume right then
if someone was dumping a lot of stock on the market, but nothing. I
might have seen more Down-Volume if someone was "dumping" stock. The
spike was the typical one just before the close as the market makers did
their thing. That was 150Ms! But then, it often is.

So I can't tell WHAT was going on, but something was. The real story
is: if all you knew was the closing prices most news outlets give you,
you got the wrong story for the day!

Timing Signals: I don't use or recommend timing signals, but they're
fun to watch. If I did though, well, I might use something like this.
(Be warned!! It tends to whipsaw around signal points!)

Last Signal: BUY Date: 10/31/05 S&P: 1207
