Hi, Tom,
Is there any chance of getting this guy to another avian vet? Is there a
University nearby with a Small Animal Clinic Veterinary program or Avain
Medicine Division? I really suggest the visual aspect of s/s. Today it
is very safe and is one way to know for sure and save on wasted time
when breeding. Like I said, I would never have known about the scarred
testicles if not for s/s. I look at it like this. People undergo much
more dangerous punch biopsies everyday and even without anesthesia. I
know this. I've been a nurse for 11 years.
Yes the trocar goes into an airsac. There the scope is positioned for
visualizing. It is like looking through a glass window. It is not
actually in the abdominal cavity.
The most common problem related to the airsac is if the muscles that
overlay it in a criss-cross overlapping layered formation do not go back
together correctly. If they seperate, air leaks and the bird blows
up like a baloon. This usually goes down in a day or two. I've only seen
or heard of a few bad cases and this is unusual. Worst case it can be
corrected surgically. It happens in people too. It happened to my uncle
when he had a lung biopsy for cancer. He bitched but didn't think the
whole human race should stop having lung biopsies.
I think you oughtta see if you can find a way to check out the birds
innards and to heck with the conservatives. Are they offering you a
replacement bird while you are wasting your time? I don't think so. And
furthermore I doubt that you will mistreat the affected Gray if
something is wrong with him.
I guess we take for granted the Vet school here in Fla and also the fact
that there seem to be Avian vets within 100 miles all over the state.
That's what ticks me off about people who want to use their dog vet when
we discuss me selling them a bird. I am picky. If they persist I just
don't sell it to them. I know a few good general vets that refer to the
U of F or to other avian vets if things are out of their scope. i would
and have used them in a pinch (like when the AAV [Assoc of Avian Vet]
conference is going on and the bird vets all over are in another state.
But I wouldn't go to them for orthopedics or surgery. I would for lab
work or a shipping health cert or an all out emergency. But generaly if
it's so bad it can't wait til morning, a vet isn't going to be able to
do much.
Well, good luck and TTYL,
Barbara
