Yup...
1) dump Netware, as Warp Server is documented faster.
2) dump NetBios and use something with a faster protocol available
3) (most important) swap the machines, make the P60 the server and the P120
the BBS machine. The BBS needs the speed more than than the Netware server.
You would probably find adequate server performance with a 486dx2/66 with the
same RAM as you are getting with the P120.
Have you many other machines and have you a real need for a network? My BBS
is a single P133 with 128mb RAM and 14GB of storage. I also run well over 2
gig of messages on this beast. The act of scanning for messages essentially
causes a search routine to look at every byte of data in the message base. If
you have a 100mbit network, and you can even achieve a 30-40mbit throughput
(about the best you can expect with a two or three node system IIRC) and you
have a simple .5gb message area you would be using a minimum of 2.1 minutes
to pull that much data. You will probably never see the network be able to
pull that kind of throughput for that type of request.
To get real speed, put more RAM and raw processor speed in the BBS, get a
real nice set of 7200 or 9600rpm Ultra Fast Wide SCSI drives and Adaptec
2940UW PCI and keep your message bases on the BBS machine. This machine runs
7 nodes of Max2.02wb, a full time PPP link pulling a full FTP feed and more
newsgroups than I can shake a stick at as well as moving a feed to another
net from here, I have GIGO in it's own window, FastEcho2 is in it's own
window as well as seperate windows for SMTPD and FIFTP/SOUPER. I use the Boca
ATIO6 card with all ports slaved to IRQ5.
