"Lebanese blast kills intelligence officer's bodyguard

The bodyguard of a senior Lebanese intelligence officer has been killed
near the southern city of Sidon. The officer - Colonel Samir Shehadeh - was
seriously injured along with four others when a bomb exploded as two cars
carrying him and his companions passed through the coastal village of
Rmeileh. Shehadeh was in the second. Sergeant Wissam Harb, who was sitting
in the front seat of the first, took the full force of the blast. No one
has claimed responsibility for the attack but Shehadeh, who works for the
Interior Ministry, played a leading role in Lebanon's inquiry into last
year's assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri. Over the
next few weeks Beirut plans to authorise an international tribunal to try
the suspects. An initial UN report said Syrian security officials and their
allies in Lebanon were involved in Hariri's death.
