| subject: | Re: [OS2HW] Updated Install Disks |
Hello Thank you, everyone who replied. I'm not really sure why I feel so motivated to install OS/2 on this new PC especially when it uses an Atheros wireless NIC and so far I've seen no drivers for it so it would be basically "incommunicado" but I guess I do just want to see this thing FLY as I know it will with a well tweaked OS/2 system on it! I'm actually planning on both recommended methods even though I haven't seen updated install diskettes for WSeB 4.5. Until I find those, whose method I know fairly well (and considering I've forgotten how to update them myself at least properly to avoid SNP errors) but I can immediatley emply UpdCD, or as immediately as I can find the suggested kernel update someplace other than "pay to play" since this is impractical until wireless drivers are forthcoming. This will be my first time actually using UpdCD. I've only browsed the docs so far, so it may be a little while before I have any data, benchmarks, etc to send to the group. BTW and FWIW I was surprised by running into install problems with Slackware and Xandros Linux, both latest versions, and somewhat ironically saddened that XP went right in with no hiccups since I barely use it at all anymore and really only wanted it for the wide variety of benchmark and diagnostic apps available to help tweak this system to a fine polish. Other than the install problems, of which I'm not yet aware of the specific culprit, I'm very happy with my system. My last 5 mobo purchases have been Asus but this time I bought an MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum becaause it 1) supports OS/2 as stated in the manual (and in the bios) , and 2) I wanted a mobo that had Socket 939 for AMD 64 support with onchip memory controller that sported the nVidia nForce chipset. I got the mobo and a new Venice core Athlon 64 3000+ with excellent hs/fan both, total, for around $235 US, after rebates. I polished the CPU heat spreader and heatsink (which oddly, is all aluminum, no copper) face to a mirror finish (using the mirror base method) and even overclocked from default 1800 MHz to 2000MHz the temp is only 46 C and that's in an Antec Sonata case which has special, dynamic power outlets for fans for quietude (and this bad boy just whispers at idle). Because of this the temps only rise 2 C under extended severe load. I'm impressed! Oh! and the fantas tic news is that according to SiSoft Sandra 2004 this system equals or beats a P4 2.8GHz machine and I really haven't dialed it in yet. The floating point is actually equal to a 3.2GHz P4 even at stock settings. This is gonna be fun! I can't wait to see what it does with OS/2. Jimmy ------------------------ Yahoo!
