There's a ferry that takes you there...the width between Martha's and Chappy is only about 2 football length fields. Ferry ride lasts about two minutes. Breathtaking seashore national parks and, only one gas station on the island, and maybe a grocery store and fire station. Saw the bridge where it all happened. Hardly any depth of water, but just enough to cover a car should it plunge in. The bridge is over a small waterlet (is there such a word) that leads to a wildlife preserve. Maybe they were going bird-watching in the middle of night (not). In any case the ferry to and from Martha's Vineyard (where there's a hospital, doctors' offices, a couple of police stations, several firehouses, and emergency personnel) stops running about 10 or 11 pm and doesn't start until the next morning at 6 or 7 am. So if there's a medical emergency, or any kind of emergency one has to wait until the ferry starts running before help can arrive. Mary Jo might have lived if police help could have been summoned. In about any other place that would have been possible. Judy --- BBBS/NT v4.01 Flag-5* Origin: Barktopia BBS Site http://HarborWebs.com:8081 (1:379/45) SEEN-BY: 633/267 270 @PATH: 379/45 1 633/267 |
