Well, no evidence equals no basis. Even eyewitness testimony is but
hearsay in court. The rewards of being a "victim" of an abduction are
many..from monetary to ego engrandizment.
Considering the number and frequency of abduction accounts it would seem
that SOME...or even a bit of evidence would exist. I, myself, believe IF
aliens were about (and I don't) they would be of such a higher level of
intelligence that they would look at us like we do gerbils or
clams...well, I don't hide my existence from gerbils or clams. 
The whole idea that governments are covering up proof of alien
visitation is equally silly. First because the thought that people would
panic is silly...people WANT aliens to exist, second..any government
that had aliens or alien technology would ADVERTISE IT! They would be
the kings of the world. What use is having the most threatening
weapons and technology if you don't tell the enemy about your
superiority. That's simple logic, that is proven in the whelms of
nuclear deterrence. People gotta know you got the nukes and the
technology to deliver them effectively for the deterrent effect to work.
This alien abduction stuff is just new age superstition. Urban myth.
Dragons, and demons, and elves, and fairies, and such, were the
abductors of the past. People were just as convinced of these abductions.
Now it could be said that we have no evidence that these things didn't
happened, too. People of reason tend to discount such reports though.

(p.s. I DO believe that life exists on other planets. That much is a
mathematical certainty, IMO. That lifes ability and intent to get here,
AND hide the fact that they have done it thousands or more times (or
even once), is want I doubt.)
