subject: stb 4 port serial card

Some senseless babbling from Jonathan Michaels to All
on 03-29-98 23:52 about stb 4 port serial card...
JM> i have inherited an stb 4 port serial card, it has a startech 16650
JM> vlsi chip on it and jumper for irq and address for each of the 4 serial
JM> ports. it has fifo caching and those funny ps/2ish ports on the
 JM> backplane.
JM> can somebody who has one help me with where to get the cable for this
JM> card, more importantlu where i can get dicumantaion/drivers etc for it.
E-mail me at thanny@home.com (or netmail via Fido if you don't have e-mail
access) for documentation questions. I have this card with documentation,
but there's too much information to post without specific questions.
As for the wires, I suggest trying STB. The connectors are not proprietary
- standard 8-pin DIN connectors. My manual describes them as IBM cables,
so you could also try there as well, but I wouldn't bet on the organization
necessary to order such a small part. If you've got a nerdy computer store
around you, you might try there as well.
Alternately, you can try http://www.computeresp.com/
That site has a lot of links to vendors for all kinds of stuff. You might
find something.
JM> i believe thatt this is the serial card that was being advertised by
JM> steve winters of christian fidonet conference fame some years ago.
Ugh. Almost makes me want to rip it out :)
JM> is id possible to set this up on an os/2 box ? how, currently os/2
JM> sees a serial cards but when it comes to connecting a modem os/2
JM> complain's about the card not being thier, that is were os/2 thinks it
JM> is .. thes card cam out od a ms win95 box that ran binkleyterm (not
JM> very reliably, it was one of my downlinks)
Works wonderfully with OS/2 using the SIO serial drivers. I have all four
ports sharing the same IRQ, which SIO supports. You can probably set each
port to a separate IRQ to get COM.SYS working with it, but I recommend SIO
just the same.
The configuration of the jumpers is very much more complicated than it
appears, so you won't be able to guess at it :)
