Speaking in an unknown tongue is not bearing any fruit, just barbarians (1
Cor. 14:10-11). The Holy Spirit is not ministering to you nor anyone else.
To use modern terms, it is merely psychological.
Anyone who claims to speak in an unknown tongue knows very well he or she
does not understand what they are saying, nor the person who is listening
able to comprehend. The only thing a person can say about tongues is that
it makes one FEEL good or SPIRITUAL.
I was having my hair done when I came across a Christian lady beside me who
was reading a book. We ended up getting involved on the discussion of
tongues. She was a tongue-speaking person. She said when she speaks in
tongues, it makes her feel "spiritual." So I asked her, "What does feeling
spiritual 'feel like?'" She began to lift her shoulders and stuttered trying
to give me an answer. She couldn't. It is obvious people are turning to
"experiences" rather than the word of God.
I practiced speaking in tongues for many years. I would often speak in my
unknown tongue for my prayer life because there were times I did not know
what or how to pray. After I prayed in unknown tongues, I FELT BETTER,
because God got the message even though I couldn't understand what I was
praying. After finding out the Biblical truth concerning tongues, I
renounced it. I no longer practice it. When I did this, I found I had a
very hard time with my prayer life. Indeed intercessory prayer is very
difficult, but it can be done. I realize now the only thing unknown tongues
did for me was keep me away from my responsibility of communicating with
God in my own language.
As we continue in 1 Cor. 14, we have a passage perverted by modern men who
think women should not utter a sound. They crawl all over 1 Cor. 14:34
where it deals with how "women are to keep silence in the churches." However,
these men are very selective readers for they fail to read they are to do the
same (vs. 28)! So the passage doesn't mean a woman must keep her mouth shut.
If you read the whole chapter, you will discover the CONTEXT deals with a
woman keeping her mouth shut where it concerns prophesying and speaking in
tongues in the assembly. (NOW go back to post D. There were women in that
crowd. Acts 1:13,14; Acts 2:1)
So in the context, the women are to keep silent in churches where it concerns
prophesying and tongues: they are forbidden to speak, period ("..for it is
not permitted unto them to speak;" v. 34)! Where? "..in the churches:"
(v.34). Concerning what? "Prophesying and Tongues" (see whole chapter). If
you are a woman doing this, why are you disobeying the word of God!
The word of God further says concerning women, "And if they will learn
anything, let them ask their husbands at home." (1 Cor. 14:35) Learn
anything about what? Well, what we have gone over so far had to do with
prophesying and tongues. If the woman is confused, she is to do what is
commanded in verse 35. She is to discuss the matter with her husband at
home. So no matter what explanations are given to "spiritualize" the verses
away, it won't work. Either we believe what we read or continue to disobey
the word of God. The fact is, every Corinthian church existing today is
violating the instructions given by the Holy Spirit in 1 Corinthians,
chapter 14. What they are doing is purely unscriptural!
Okay, now for the men:
"If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two or at the most
three, and that by course; and let one interpret. But if there be no
interpreter let HIM KEEP SILENCE in the church: and let him speak to himself,
and to God." (vs. 27-28)
I told you, Paul is going to eliminate this unknown tongues business. Now,
how many men are allowed to speak in unknown tongues? Does it say 10, 50,
100, 200, the whole congregation? No. He plainly tells the woman to keep
silent, and only gives men permission "by two or at the most three..., and
that by course (meaning by order) one after the other to speak, and
there had better be an interpreter present at that (1 Cor. 14:27), or
otherwise he is to, KEEP SILENT.
These carnal, fleshly Christians in the Corinthian church must keep in
mind that tongues are for a sign (1 Cor. 14:22), not to them that believe,
but to them that believe not. The JEWS require a sign. The Bible
definition from Mark 16 to Acts 2, from Acts 10, to 19 and 1 Cor. 12-14, are
signs that were given to Jewish apostles for confirming the word.
Paul further says:
"Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that
by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown
tongue." (1 Cor. 14:19)
Well, that certainly puts a damper on unknown tongues. Paul keeps rubbing
the salt in, doesn't he? Now, tell me how many times you hear that verse
repeated today! The next time you hear babbling from another, "interpret"
their babbling with 1 Cor. 14:19.
Remember, in an unknown tongue nobody understands anything. In the authentic
speaking in tongues there is understanding as seen in Acts 2:6, etc. Again,
thank God for the Authorized Version because we can make sense out of 1 Cor.
14. It is very obvious there are two types of tongues Paul is speaking
about.
