300 is blazing fast. The _first_ modem I built ran at 45 Baud. :-) _That's_
slow! I do know of another "service" though that runs at about 11 Baud. I
can't tell you anything about that one, though. :-)
The 300bps circuit is to the local "standard time" provider. The data
transmission itself (a binary coded time and date) takes less than a second
at 300 bps, and using a higher speed just isn't necessary. You'd spend more
time negotiating V.34 than you'd actually spend receiving the data. :-)
