I tend to think that this with UV light set up the genetic code.

Purines were most prevalent and so were hydrophilic amino acids.

Dimers would restrict the number
of pyrimidines, and there would be fewer hydrophobic amino acids.

Thus most purines would code philic, and pyrimidines phobic.
And this would lead to the genetic code. (Look at a typical tRNA and see how
dimers may effect the order, folds, etc.

Also with many dimers it sets up certain coding order where no two pyrimidines
would be adjacent, etc.
