subject: Re: [OS2HW] No sound

Hi Jim
First off as long as you choose a sound card that is well supported it
would work and with a bit of a bonus in most cases. Onboard sound has
gotten rather good of late but they all still chew resources that can be
freed for other things especially on a performance constrained system.
However recently because of the considerable improvement in onboard sound
Creative Labs has had to jump through serious hoops to stay in the game at
all, something they've worked hard and ruthlessly for and their big
breakthrough is the new XiFi chip which they claim is so efficient that it
can cause up to 15% increase in *framerates* (we're talking video here) in
modern games on ultimate multimedia machines (we're talking P4 Extremes and
AMD 64's here with well over a gig of DDR ram). This by no means
recommends a new Creative Labs sound card to OS/2 users but it is a reality
check as to just how much impact a sound card can have on a system, *any*
system.

OTOH it should also be possible depending on motherboard/bios features to
hard assign for example your scsi card (assuming it is a card and not also
onboard) and the card itself since some older scsi cards had jumpers or
software that would assign resources. In CMOS setup, usually under
something like PNP/PCI setup on many boards/bioses one can assign an IRQ to
a given slot although usually one must have chosen "manual"
rather than "auto" for resource assignment up at the top of the
page. I tend to do this as a matter of course since otherwise windows
tends to install almost everything on IRQ 9 even when other IRQ's are
available and I always disable serial and parallel ports since I no longer
use them and haven't for quite some time.

Also although I don't know anything specific about ECS, if it has stuck
close to OS/2, it may also require removing and reinstalling the equivalent
of MMOS2 after everything else works and sometimes in the case of changing
drivers so that no remnants are left hanging around of previous drivers.
Don't go by just me here, since this may be specific to OS/2 only but
obviously driver choice is important and so is clean install.

Good luck
Jimmy
