-> The worst problem with 'impoundment' is when the vehicle is stolen,
-> and the owner has to pay.
Not in every case, but as I read on...
-> Happened to me. My car was stolen, used in a homicide. I had to pay
-> for the privlegde of having my car impounded while it was 'evidence'.
-> I had no choice in this. It cost me almost 6,000$ and none of it
-> could be recouped from the people who stole my car.
What did your insurance cover? We store cars involved in Felonies and
the insurance companies generally foot the bill, or replace the car,
depending on condition. Did the court or the LE agency involved give
you a victims rights kit? Most States now are obligated to reimburse
you for such fees. Unless the car was stolen by pure neglect on your
part (i.e. left the keys in it) the burden of the investigation cost
falls upon the LE agency and the Prosecutor.
It's been a while since I had this training, I could be wrong...
