PL> Why can't you use a standard VGA setting for the display of both?
Because I want to use a higher resolution than VGA for the graphics display.
A 600x800 display (or even higher) improves the readability of small print in
preview mode enormously. In text mode I use standard VGA, however, since
that's easiest on the eyes.
PL> Is there something strange with your hardware?
Not that I'm aware. I've used different resolutions for the text and graphics
modes for many years (up to now with Cirrus Logic chip-based cards) and have
always found the results quite good. Only thing that surprises me now is that
the Cirrus driver apparently works (at least reasonably well) with the
present card, although this one is based on a different chip. However, I'd
prefer to use a proper Trios64+ driver if I can locate one. Up to now I
haven't been successful in Germany.
PL> As you're using an S3 Trios64+ is your card a Diamond?
No, just a no-name with the Trios64+ chip. I assume any driver that supports
this chip will work properly... at least that's been my experience using a
generic Cirrus driver with various Cirrus cards.

PL> ... or am I missing something here?
Possibly. You can, of course, use VGA for both the text and graphics modes,
but if you do, you'll find it hard or impossible to read fine print (anything
below about 8-10 points) on the graphics display. At higher graphics
resolutions, even the fine print is crisp and easily readable.
Cheers, Bob
