I didn't mean to imply that I thought the means were justified, just that
the despicable nature of the information being uncovered may be helpful in
curtailing it in the future (on a more or less voluntary nature - if only
to raise their awareness of what the contents of their files looks like to
others). In other words if someone lost their job/was penalized over the
access, at least some other good may come out of it.

Well, I'm sure the acts are unethical, but whether they're illegal is
another matter. Regardless all parties aware of, or involved in the access
should be penalized. However, it is also possible that someone using the
information is/was entirely unaware of the nature of the source.
