From: Gene McAloon
Your attempt to portray the Democrat's objections to Estrada a racism is
not only inaccurate but dishonest as well.
It is the Democrats who favor minorities, not the Republicans. Estrada's
only qualification for the appointment is his extreme conservatism. Much of
the opposition to his appointment comes from Latinos who see his
appointment as contrary to their overall agenda. The remark made in the
memo about it being difficult to oppose Estrada if he should get the
appointment and later be nominated for a seat on the Supreme Court concerns
the all too frequent fact that minorities will sometimes support a minority
candidate for high office just
to get one of their own race such a position, regardless of his politics.
Think Thomas in that regard.
From an electoral politics point of view, most Latinos vote Democratic, not
Republican, and do so because they see the Democrats as favoring those
policies most useful to them. Bush nominated Estrada only because he is
sufficiently conservative and because he hopes to attract Latino votes. It
points up how cynical the far-right can be when it nominates minorities to
high positions assuming they are sufficiently conservative and doing that
despite the Republican party's long history of racial bigotry.
