Interesting story Tom... I know of a similar case in Tallahassee
Florida several years ago except that this fellow had a passion for the
Fire Department. He was mildly retarded but could drive. The real
kicker was that he was a sole survivor of a wealthy family and had
lots of money to spend on his "hobby". He had the best equipped rescue
wagon in town, all with the latest and greatest technology. The fire
fighters dubbed him "honorary chief". He showed up at all fires and
rescue situations with his ID card, ready to lend a hand or equipment.
Everybody knew him. Fortunately, the real fire fighters and rescue
personnel were able to guide him enough that he never became a problem.
His equipment was used several times to effect rescues and life saving
procedures when his was better than the department's.
