I used 99% iso-propyl alcohol as an additive for all my
gas and diesel fuels while operating in Newfound. Our oil
fired furnaces for housing also used diesel so we added it
there to prevent freezing in the lines.....
The best cure we had was a heat-truck. We had a couple of
Herman-Nelson aircraft heaters mounted on the back of of a
6 X 6. A tarp was thrown over the offender and the heat
ducted under the tarp...That soon thawed out things. Also
had a large generator for booster starts.... We had over 100
pieces of snow removal equipment for the base at Stephenville
and for the off-base roads... That was in the early 1950s.
I learned a lot about icing in three years there. :)
