Hi Steven,

MvdV>> going to save it. We hobbyists simply do not have the resources
MvdV>> of Microsoft. Trying to compete with the visual might of
MvdV>> Microsoft is a lost cause from the beginning.

SH> A niche does not have to be lined with hairshirts. If a
SH> GUI is available, promote it.

It is being promoted by those that believe GUI to be an asset. I am not one
of them as I have mixed feelings about GUI's. That's what I liked about
OS/2. It could be run in text mode. Have the benfits of full 32 bit
proxessing without the overhead of the graphic shell. ;-)

MvdV> No, we should forget that. We can not compete on form, we must
 MvdV> compete on /content/.

SH> Content looks so much better with a GUI. I don't write my
 SH> letters with timEd.

Neither do I, but I think too much graphics distract rather than add to content.

MvdV>> That may be so in your part of the world, over here it certainly
 MvdV>> isn't.

SH> It will catch up to you.:-)

I am not sure what this was about, but I am sure you are right. Eventually
we will catch up. The question is when.

MvdV> Yes, the number of people that access the internet via adsl or
MvdV> cable is growing. But the number of people doing so via POTS or
MvdV> ISDN is still growing faster.

SH> ISFN never caught on over here

Pity. It has a lot of advantages over POTS. Not just for data, but for the
old voice too...

SH> and both ADSL and cable are affordable alternatives to dial-up accounts.

ADSL is not an /alternative/ to a dial up line. It is an addition to it and
whatever way you put it, sets you back a minumum of another EUR 30,- a
month. Not counting the initial investment.

MvdV>> POTS is still a long way from being dead.

SH> I think you over-estimate its life span.

Wanne bet?

Cheers, Michiel
