An acoustic would definitely be changed.  An electric would be changed in 
proportion to the amount of wood removed.  The pattern COULD affect the tone, 
as something with a natural resonant frequency in the range of the guitar (or 
one of it's undertones) could tend to emphasize some sounds more than 
others... but it's unlikely.
For an electric, I'd say go for it but be careful in how much wood is 
oved.
