From: Gene McAloon Fallows has got his heart in the right place. Unfortunately he needs to do some work on his brain. I recall his shedding crocodile tears in Canopus about the divisive and ultra-partisan nature of much of the media. He felt it was unprecedented and a sick symptom of our sick times. He was wrong of course as I attempted to point out to him on a number of occasions. Particularly in the early years of the republic, the press was even more partisan and downright bilious in its coverage of politics. That kind of thing recurred periodically with the media in this country. But Fallows was having none of that. He thought he had a good whipping boy and a good story to go with it. He didn't. Did he really expect anyone to plow through that whole article in the Atlantic, practically parsing Bush's speech sentence by sentence? What in god's name was his editor thinking when he decided to publish it? Fallows method of criticizing the speech is not the way such things are done. It reads like the mistake of some college kid and I can't imagine any English prof giving such a thing a passing grade. Poor Fallows; all heart and little brain. A presidential speech writer. Indeed.
