The phone was engaged on Wednesday Night/Thursday Morning because the modem
was being used to dial into Xiayi's work. We both spent most of the night
mucking around on MVS trying to get some database stuff to work. One thing
we did find out was that my theory that 33.6k modems using LAPM compression
would provide better response times for doing interactive MVS type work
compared to a 2400 bps modem without error correction was actually correct.
The faster computer probably helped to. It's basically just like using a
normal 3270 terminal, the screens just pop up. It's really really great.
It's all in a bit of a mess at the moment though, because the software is
not complete, and I couldn't configure com3, so I'm using com2, which
involved unplugging all 3 com ports. There is likely to be another outage
sometime Friday night.
It's actually quite difficult trying to name a time when I won't be using
the computer (ie I'm sure to be either at work or sleeping). Oh well, at
least it doesn't happen very often. There's not too many cheap solutions
to the problem otherwise.
BFN. Paul.
