Well, I have done some more looking. Unfortunately I have not found
Hamilton's original paper on the internet, and I don't have any easy access
to a library that has it. What I did find is an article (www.wsu.edu/
~gomulki/gencb511/II/outlineII_1.pdf) that discusses the mathematics of
Malecot's IBD in some detail, and then goes on to state that this is
equivalent to Hamilton's "r", even if Hamilton did not originally
discuss r
in those terms.
Now if you have references that show otherwise, I would be happy to learn
of them.
