Hello all:>
I just had to write and let you all know that I have been reading this
echo for sometime now, and i have gotten tons of good advice. now I would
like to share something that happended to us...
I live in the Ft. Walton Beach area of Florida..several months ago we got hit
with hurricane erin..we had several days notice that erin was comming, so
evacuating was not a big deal then...I took my birds and all their food,
cages, toys, ect..to a friends house.they were fine..Erin didn't do much to
us...I thought I had it all under control, and that I took great care of my
birds..I also thought that since we had been hit with hurricane erin, we were
not goona get slammed again..stupid me..
I read an artical in Bird Talk about preparing for disasters when you have
to leave your house in a hurry..keeping extra food and toys for your
birds..the one thing I didn't think about was water for the birds..thankgod I
read that artical and put bottel of water in our storage room just in case..
Guess what..hurricane Opal decided to become a catagory 3-4 over night....I
went from thinking I was spending th night in a hotel again, to being told
that I would prob not have a home to come back to, and that I had to leave
the area...so I grabed the birds from my friends house..their travel
cages..and the emergancy supplys I had..(most of which I didn't replace from
erin)..It took 8 hours to drive to tallahassee, which is usally a 2 1/2 hour
drive..we didn't get a hotel untill 1 am..the birds were very stressed, not
eating..not drinking..we were stressed...the next morning we got up and fed
the birds..and Roger my orange winged amazon ate like crazy..everything he
saw he wanted, this was very encouraging, or so I thought..not an hour after
we got back on the road, I looked over at Roger and he was shaking his head
up and down, with his beak wide open..I pulled off the road and grabed him,
he was choking, then he started throwing up everything he ate that
morning.this and he also developed very runny stool..so I hit the next exit
and started looking for a vet, I ended up not finding a vet, but I gave Roger
some waterdown gatorade (the low sodium kind) and he perked up..by the time
we got where we were going to stay for the duration, Roger was not at all
happy about anything..when we got his cage setup where he was gonna be, he
slept for 6 hours, woke up, and he was fine...the only other trouble we had
was finding the bird food he and
my tiel eat, none of the pet stores I went to had the pellets for my
tiel..when we got home, we still had a home:) I have already replenish
the emergancy supplys..including a bottle of gatorade....
