EMuck and FDCMuck are two Disney-related (but not run by The Walt Disney Co.)
MUCKs -- Multi User Chat areas that contain role-playing, exploration, and
fun. Of the two, EMuck is newer and has a newer, more full-featured
operating system which allows more *magic* (programming tricks) to happen.
They are on the Internet, but not the web per se... You reach the MUCKs
via something on the Internet called "Telnet" in which you can log on
to a remote computer system (even all the way around the world) from
where you are. So, many people log on at the same time and get together
to have Disney-style fun on EMuck and FDCMuck.
If you have an Internet account, get any kind of Telnet software -- but
preferably something with a chat window in which you'll be typing and
entering your commands and actions. The incoming text won't go into the
chat window so it is less confusing than not having a chat window.
I recommend EMuck over FDCMuck, and it is also the easiest one to go to
as a guest. Connect to EMuck via Telnet to alia.ce.umn.edu 6903 (the IP
address is 134.84.148.81). The URL for telnet access is
telnet://alia.ce.umn.edu:6903.
EMuck's login screen ends with this line:
EntertainMuck (alia) login:
That last line (EntertainMuck (alia) login:) is your cue to connect to
the game server by typing 'connect guest guest' (without quotes). That
will connect you to one of EMuck's guest characters.
There is a Guest Tutorial in the Welcome Center Lounge (the first place
you will be in as a guest) which gives a step-by-step outline of basic
commands that will help you chat and explore on EMuck. It's also found
on EMuck's web page at http://alia.ce.umn.edu/emuck.html -- just follow
the Documentation link. You can also type 'LOOK HELP WANTED' (without
quotes) in either the Welcome Center Lounge and Mickey's Cyber Diner to
see a one-screenful summary of the most important things to know. From
the lounge just type and enter 'chat' (without quotes) to get to Mickey's
Cyber Diner -- that's where we have chats nightly at 10 pm Central time
(11 pm Eastern/8 pm Pacific). But EMuck is open 24 hours a day for fun!
Hope to see you there, John!
