Kris,

FWIW, twenty-five years ago - when I was *very* heavily into
assembler/disassembler - I had a Qume Daisywheel printer [cost about as
much as an entire present-day SMP system running on twin 64-bit CPUs, in
the days when a (10" x 6") 64_KB_ DRAM cost US$750.00] and I was able
programatically to draw graphs on that Daisy-wheel printer just using
the *dot* ["."] and controlling the rotation of the printer's platen and
the horizontal head positioning to 1/144th of an inch, by learning all
the escape codes for that printer. When I later had a Texas Instruments
TI-855 with three slots for different font families, in multiple sytles
- super-condensed to extra-large - I was able to do a screen-dump that
matched the memory-mapped terminal display exactly - and I could print
landscape on it, interactively - I could spin the platen etc., just
using the keyboard's arrow keys. That was around 23 years ago, in the
days when commercial printer drivers were very generic, and had few
features - so no, you don't *have* to use an OS-specific printer-driver
to output traffic on a printer.
