they told you wrong, the rom is flashable but if the data pump needs
modification it's ship it back to the factory for chip replacement, at
least that's what i got off the web site and dl'ed manuals.
now that brings up a gripe of mine, i'm not buying _anything_ i can't
check manuals for specifications and Hayes doesn't have them on their site.
i was leaning toward Hayes 56kflex voice but am now leaning toward
Motorola VoiceSurfer for the above mentioned reason. i saw a Hayes
data fax at Best Buy and if i knew the specifications were the same for
the voice modem i'd have found and bought one. it actually had information
on the outside of the box that's not on their web site, jumper configurable,
flashable pump and of course these are the specs i'm looking for.
So it comes down to this, if i find a Hayes voice before i buy and it's
similar to its data fax cousin, it's Hayes, if not it's Motorola
VoiceSurfer. besides Motorola sent me this really cool T-shirt for
