well RPI modems need special drivers and won't even operate in many Dos
comm. programs. Lots of these new modems are RPI as it's easier to
upgrade them to new standards as they arrive. Last i knew Linux didn't
have an RPI driver written for it and there's no way it'd have one for
RPI 56kflex. Unix is far from brain dead, it's what makes up the
internet what it is. What i specifically need is a modem that has
_hardware_ data correction and compression, flashable data pump and
rom. Windows isn't so bad one you add aftermarket comm. driver, modify
system.ini, add large drive capacity, modify system.ini, add monoumb.386
for more conventional memory, modify system.ini ect. ect. ect.
I've actually gotten Windows quite stable but it involved a whole lot
of surgery. i've got an old no name modem in this machine now that
i got for 52.00 when they were mostly going for 89.00 and it's not
given me any trouble whatever, i might just have to limp along with
it for a while longer. i'll tell you i don't know why they just don't
dedicate a cpu in modern modems add flashable rom and bingo you could
program the thing for any standard you want. cnet was really hot on
the Diamond SupraExpress but there again dl'ed the manual and it's RPI,
fine for most folks but not for what i want. Best regards.
